Gradual Acceleration
Girl Talk
Andrew looked at the black roan filly that stood before him with her tongue sticking out rubbing her lips across Steve’s black north face jacket. Andrew laughed at the streak of clear spit that appeared after it with leftover bits of hay in it. He’d never seen or heard of this small two year old filly by the name of Girl Talk, or Lassy as she was known around the stable. The filly was a different color, with a big white blaze on her dark black head, it almost seemed as if someone had painted it on there it was so white, like when you step outside on a sunny day with snow on the ground bright.
“Hey Steve, I think you got a little horse slobber on your jacket,” Andrew laughed.
“I know...” Steve muttered, walking Girl Talk around after cinching her saddle up for the last time. “One thing you should know about Lassy is she's a slow thinker and a gradual runner, and takes her leisurely time in pushing up through the places, so let her out notch by notch and do it slowly, she’ll respond, but it won’t be instant.”
“Sounds interesting.” Andrew said.
“It’s different, just something to keep in mind, even as you race her.” Steve said, walking her in one last circle. “Push her for five, let her gallop out to a mile and a sixteenth.”
“Will do boss,” Andrew said, and walked over to Lassy’s small 15.3 hand, black roan body and let Steve give him a leg up.
Once he was settled on the fillies back, Steve started to lead her over to The Wire’s turf track. Andrew stuck the whip under his arm and slid his goggles down to his eyes, putting his feet in the irons of the red racing saddle.
Lassy’s hooves sunk into the turf, her ears perked almost instantly, this wasn’t her first time back on the track since her 2 month layoff, Steve had been having the young apprentice jockey Jessie Coppermen exercising her before deciding that Andrew would ride her in her next race.
Steve unclipped the lead and patted Lassy’s but, “off you go.”
Andrew started Lassy off with a nice long trot, and then a gallop, there was no need to injure her before she even got to come back to the track.
The gate was occupied with a long line of horses, and Lassy loaded like a pro, so Andrew decided to start her out in the open. He waited for the last horse to pass and clicked his tongue, Lassy started out slower, but she gradually built up speed. By the time the 1st furlong came to an end Steve let out another notch. Just as Steve had said, the filly build up speed gradually, by the end of the 3rd furlong Steve pushed the filly faster as her hooves struck the turf, gliding over it almost effortlessly. Lassy was a beautiful galloper, there was no doubt about that. This filly was fast. The home stretch soon approaching, Andrew let out another notch and tapped the filly on the rump, her acceleration wasn’t instant, but rather gradual, and they were flying past the wire in no time.
Andrew let the filly gallop out to a mile and a sixteenth before pulling her up. The layoff didn’t seem to affect the filly much, Jessie had done a great job with her. She couldn’t be more ready for the seven furlong Vitiate Maiden.
